Peeps,


All around the world the faithful gather in places traditionally regarded as holy spaces, to hear their respective leaders celebrate the rebirth of Christ, believed by many to represent the Almighty's promise of salvation through His Son (Our Lord).  While I respect the beliefs of these gentle souls, as well as admire the depth of their devotion to matters profane, I must confess to not a small amount of discontent at the state of affairs in no other than the Holy City. I find it very hard to accept the proclamations of the leader of the Roman Catholic Church on matters of the spirit (or the flesh), when I consider the less than admirable behavior on his part, as well as other senior officials regarding the issue of marriage equality, and the continued silence or denial vis-a-vis charges of sexual abuse by young boys at the hands of men (of the cloth).  Recent allegations about forced castration on Dutch youth in the 1950's by Catholic-run institutions might well have been the final nail in the proverbial coffin.  So difficult to view the pomp and pageantry of the recent proceedings in Rome without thoughts of all the innocent lives throughout history which have been destroyed without so much as an official apology or acknowledgment for injustices rendered by those who purport to function as intermediaries between the Divine and His children.  Fear the shepherd, not the wolves!!


Still, for a confirmed agnostic such as myself, all is not lost.  The wonders of the universe are endless--as are the stars in the sky, and the sheer magnificence of it all humbles me.  Today, I completed two container urns with a combination of lily-of-the-valley/begonia(s)/creeping jenny.  Tomorrow I plan to plant moon-flower vines to clamber up towering laurels; can't wait to see their white faces reflected in the rays of the new moon.  And the promised advent of blooming irises and peonies keeps me optimistic (and fulfilled until I sense a change, or see a sign, or witness a 'miracle').
